The authoritarian parenting style is a way for parents to feel like they are in control and in power of their child (ren).  Parents who use this type of parenting style may be trying to influence their child’s behavior but are also likely to be pushing their child away because of the lack of open communication and reluctance to show their love.  Parents who use this type of control are typically strict parents who only see one right way.  They set high standards and expectations but most likely do not explain reasoning behind them.  They have clear and set rules and expect their children to follow them without questioning.  Parents who are less responsive to their child’s needs are possible authoritarian parents.  This type of parenting tends to be high in behavioral and psychological control.

This type of parenting leads to less communication and more punishment which can be very confusing to a learning child.  A child who is raised with this type of parenting is likely to understand less because of their parents overbearing need to tell the child what to do instead of allowing them to consider the right choices.  Children and adolescents who have authoritarian parents tend to do well in school and tend not be have problem behavior.  These children do have poorer social skills, lower self esteem and higher levels of depression.  Children need to be shown love and acceptance from their parents in order to have a positive emotional connection with them and with others.
